Schools

In Spain there are two types of schools. You can choose to send your child to a Spanish state school, which will be free once you are paying social security. These schools are of a good standard and the hours typically are from 8.30am until 2.30pm.

You also have the choice of a Private International school, which are many nationalities, but mainly British. They offer the British national curriculum and offer a good standard of education with smaller class numbers. Of course, with these schools you have to pay and the average cost is around 5000€ per year.

Many people choose to send their children to the Spanish state schools for several reasons. Firstly, they are free and do not cost you any additional money. They are also of a good standard and the major benefit is that your child will probably be fluent in Spanish within 12 months if they attend one of these schools and is the best way to integrate into a Spanish way of life.

Living in Spain

The Spanish way of life is, in general, at a mush slower pace than in many other countries, especially the UK and the United States. This pace of life makes life enjoyable and at the same time can be frustrating.

The Spanish people are very laid back and many really do have the “Mańana” approach to life and rarely rush over anything. They work hard and work even harder with their leisure and family time. You will often see large Spanish families enjoying weekends together with a BBQ or picnic.

You will find that getting things done, can sometime be frustrating, due this laid back approach, however, the benefits are that you live in a relaxed and friendly environment, which more than compensates for the slight delay in getting your telephone connected!

Crime levels are low in Spain when compared with many other European countries, especially the UK! The Police have respect for foreigners, but at the same time, will not tolerate any inappropriate behaviour.

When you move to Spain, you will quickly realise that you still have all of your home comforts. You will get Sky TV for all of your favourite TV shows, there is an abundance of British supermarkets for your favourite treats and your will find you keep in touch with your friends and family with low cost calls and cheap flights. You will suddenly receive an influx of visitors from the UK who all want to come and visit you in Spain.

The cost of living in Spain is around 30% lower than in the UK and you will save money on shopping, utility bills, cigarettes and alcohol. There are also many outdoor markets, which sell fantastic fresh fruit and vegetables for very low prices.

Overall, Spain offers a laid back lifestyle, the best climate in Europe and a better standard of living.
